The Utlah II by BloodhoundOmega The Utlah II by BloodhoundOmega
This picture has been rummaging in my head for a while now. It's a remake of this piece I made 8 years ago.

… Wow... time flies by, it really does.

Even though I like my original piece from back then I felt it lacked … something. The Utlah was just standing there like a big chunky gorilla, watching emotionless to the left. I felt like improving the piece, conveying more of his social position through his posture, his facial expression a.s.o.

I left out a background and positioned him in the left lower corner to have the white empty space as an oppressive element, hovering over him. That way it's up to the viewer's imagination what he's really scared of.

Also I have zero patience for graphites. XD That piece was really eating up my nerves, but I can actually lean back and think that this, too, will be a piece I will like for the next 8 years to come and who knows how my third attempt of the topic will look like then.

to me, i feel as though he is scared of something in his past, that continues to haunt him, and the Klan that ridicules him for a mistake made long ago, never forgetting the shame, and the regret. but not even knowing that it is ok to make mistakes...sort of like me.

Huch ist wirklich nen großer Unterschied zwischen beiden Werken. Gutes Beispiel, wo man sehen kann, wie du dich verbessert hast. Grade was das Fell angeht.

The composition works brilliantly - and I think you nailed it when you called it "oppressive". The textures of fur and feathers are also magnificent, and I'm glad you stuck with it until the end!

The fur and feathers are so soft and detailed! And the composition of the piece as a whole is really great. The blank space actually adds to the image, instead of making it seem empty or hollow like one would think.

Great work!

Is this like a second remake? Because I remember seeing another Utlah picture you did. In fact is was the first piece of art of yours that I saw.

This is definitely your best, though. The emotion on the wolf's face, the composition, the wounds, all better.

I love the emotion in this piece--it's got so much more tension than the original piece. Beautifully done. :+fav:

Wonderful piece, although it is sad. But the details on the ravens on the Utlah's face are amazing! I totally love the emotions you captured in this, his fear, the depression, the seemingly dominant way of the ravens,...

There is a reason ravens are also called wolfbirds. Ravens and Wolves have the same relationship as sharks and remora or hippos and oxpeckers. Or dogs and humans.

We're going to pull this comparison on the days you dare to say that you're not always improving your pratice :)
I liked the first one (and still do for lots of personnal reasons and maybe alike feeling) and I just love this "redux"

Wow. It was good before - now it's great. This employs white space SO well. I really DO want to know what he's afraid of. The crows usually symbolize something ominous, but I almost feel like they're on his side.

We might not ever know the answers, but all I know is that this is a mighty emotional piece. Excellent work. :)

Well you've really improved since then the facial expression really shows fear so you hit the mark on that:D The detail on the fur and feathers is much better I'm not familiar with graphite so I'm not sure but the shading if far better in this than in your last.
