Orryn, the crystal blacksmith by BloodhoundOmega Orryn, the crystal blacksmith by BloodhoundOmega
Well, this is probably my most favourite Xmas gift I have done this year. Mymy, I wonder why this mght be the case. ^_^

It's Orryn, the bloodhound :iconganren: and I designed for him together. He's a blacksmith, who specialised on creating blades made of Adamantite, a corall that turns into unbreakable crystal once it's forged.

You can see the coralls piled beneath him, while he is checking a raw blade for it's flawlessness.

I will add more about Adamantite and how it's won in the new year, when I have access to my own notes again. :)

Thanks for everything, my friend

I admire your coloring skills so much! I don't understand how you make the fur look so REAL! You are truly talented. Great work, like always.

Awesome picture. Though I think the term is 'Jewelsmith' or 'Stonesmith'. Blacksmithing is normally exclusively working with iron and steel.

Oh, I didn't know that. Thank you for explaining this to me. I will try to think of it in the future.

Normally, yes. But the way Bloodhound-Omega and I discussed the properties of the Adamantite, is that although it is a crystal-like coral, it is smelted and forged exactly how one would use metal.

So his occupation is based more on the process than the material. ;)

A "smith" is one who works a material over a forge. This usually implies hammering on hot stuff as well. Omnywrench is correct, "crystalsmith" would be a more accurate term, as "blacksmith" implies the working of iron.

words such as "gunsmith" and "airsmith" are bastardizations of the term, but "goldsmith," "silversmith," and "tinsmith" are accurate examples.

You are correct. As I told Omnywrench, I wasn’t trying to imply that he was wrong, but rather that I was using the term in a more general, looser sense. The problem is that there are a lot of factors about his career that makes it a bit complicated (one example being is that Orryn used to work with other metals before he came upon Adamantite, but the problem is that I don’t know what metals and ores reside on the planet of Ileyeah). But I now see that I should have referred to him simply as a “smith” or since he is pretty much, going to stick to using Adamantite, to use either “Coralsmith” or your suggestion of “Crystalsmith”.

I should have been more clear in my initial response to Omnywrench, and I applogize for the confusion.

How is 'gunsmith' a bastardization? And how do you smith air anyway? Unless you mean balloon animals or something.

An "airsmith" maintains, repairs, and modifies paintball markers. And I guess the American Heritage Dictionary disagrees with me regarding which forms are bastardized and which aren't. I understood "smith" to imply working hot materials over an anvil and similar work, but the current definition of the term refers only to an artisan.

Huh... never heard of such a profession.

And there are things such as 'handsmiths', who build things using mostly or only their hands, and 'woodsmiths', which is basically another name for a carpenter. "Poopsmith" i don't need to tell you.

I think smithing names are based on the material rather then the technique, since the majority of them are very similar (such as tinsmith, goldsmith, gunsmith, bladesmith, etc.).

Forgive me, I wasn’t trying to imply that you were wrong, as yes you are correct. I was trying to emphasize the “Normally, yes.” aspect that under normal circumstances he would be considered a coralsmith or a crystalsmith, but there a lot of factors that come into play that make it a bit complicated. One example being is that I don’t know if Ileyeah even has iron or what other types of ores would reside there. Another being that he used to work with metals (again, unknown as to which exactly) until he came upon Adamantite.

But taking all this into account and seeing as this will only cause confusion, I think maybe I should start calling him a general “smith” or take Khabok’s suggestion for “Crystalsmith” (since Adamantite is the only thing that Orryn will really be working on now) to eliminate any misunderstanding.

Again, I apologize for the confusion and not making all this clear earlier.

if your going to write a report about adamantite here's a thing about it. adamantite is not a coral,it's a metal ore that makes very very poweful wepons that contain ether dark inate eleament or holy strengh within it. it's rare and few blacksmiths can forge something outta it with sucess.

Adamantite is a thing that does not exist. Yes, Dungeons and Dragons have taken the term "Adamant" and turned it into an ore. However, seeing as how Bloodhounds are not creations of TSR, Inc, *bloodhound-omega can describe it as whatever BHO wants to. In BHO's world it's a coral.

Next time perhaps comment on the quality of the picture, rather than nitpicking something that doesn't apply?

I know what baka means, but I'm also not in kindergarten so I don't need to resort to kindergarten insults. Next time comment on the art instead of trying to make a pointless argument for something that doesn't matter and will not be impacted by anything your infantile brain comes up with.
